Music Education as a Practice of Freedom

How do we know if music is harming or healing? How do we determine if it is oppressive or liberating? How does music as a practice of freedom and agency differ from music as conformity and ventriloquism? And ultimately, how can we answer these questions with the next generation of creatives in ways that value and center their unique perspectives, knowledge and expertise?  Denver-based nonprofit Youth on Record challenges the notion that writing, performing, and/or experiencing music for its own sake is inherently liberating. In this session, Stephen Brackett (Flobots emcee) and Brent Adams (Director of Programs) of Youth on Record share their perspectives about this critical inquiry.
